Essence of care

Essence of care is a Department of Health (DH) initiative which was started 10 years ago and continues to have an important affect on the quality of care given to patients in hospitals.

The project provides a framework to assess practice and continues to look at driving up the quality of care, ensuring that the fundamentals of care are at the centre of the patient experience.
Exploring and using the ‘best practice’ elements within essence of care can help staff assess their own areas. They can compare and share their practices with other health professionals to look at changing elements within their own departments.

Hayley Reading works as our Essence of Care Matron within the trust and works closely with staff to make improvements in the quality of the care given in relation to the essence of care topics.
There are currently 12 topics that are involved within the essence of care initiative including:

  • Safety
  • Self care
  • Food and drink
  • Personal hygiene and mouth care
  • Bowel and bladder care
  • Pressure ulcers
  • Respect (including privacy and dignity)
  • Communication
  • Care environment
  • Pain
  • Promoting health and well being
  • Record keeping
