The Podiatry Service offers specialist service provision such as wound care, nail surgery, biomechanical assessment and orthotics manufacturing and supply.

The Service treats adults and children with foot and lower limb problems.

The service has 22 staff, including Podiatrists, Clinical Specialists and Foot Care Assistants.

What we do

  • Treatment of foot ulceration caused by diabetes, peripheral vascular disease, infection, trauma etc.
  • Biomechanical problems; gait analysis and assessment. Provision of foot orthoses (insoles) that compensate for foot problems such as flat foot, foot and ankle pain and can also assist with knee, hip and back problems.
  • Nail surgery for ingrowing toenails carried out under Local Analgesia.
  • Treatment of foot pathologies such as corns and callus for patients that are at risk of foot complications arising from their medical conditions and foot problems. This is aimed at preventing complications such as infection and ulceration; pain and reduced mobility and independence.

Aims and objectives of service

  • To provide early intervention, assessment, treatment and cure for foot and lower limb problems and where possible empower people to maintain their own foot health and improve or maintain mobility.
  • To prevent deterioration of long term conditions and prevent hospital admissions and surgery due to leg and foot complications.

Monday to Friday  9.00am - 4.30pm 

How do I refer or access a service?

Referrals are accepted from Patients, Carers, Other Health Care Professional, GPs and consultants. Referrals will be triaged against the service access criteria. Referrals can be obtained at GP surgeries and Health Centres, or the form can be accessed here electronically and returned to the service by post or email.

What should I bring to my appointment?
• Your appointment letter or card
• A pair of shorts for assessment of leg and foot
• A list of medication you are

Can my child attend alone?
Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

What does the Podiatrist need to know?
Details of any medical conditions and any medication you are taking

What happens at my first appointment?
On your arrival please report to the Reception.
• You will then be assessed by a podiatrist.
• A treatment plan will be discussed and agreed with you.
• The initial visit may take 40 minutes

How will my follow up appointment be arranged?
If you need an appointment within 6 weeks this will be arranged by the clinic clerk at reception before you leave the clinic.
If your review appointment is longer than 6 weeks away, then you will be asked to ring the Therapy Booking Centre 01625 661875 and given instructions of when to ring to book your next appointment by the Podiatrist.

What do I do if I cannot attend my appointment?
If you are unable to attend for your appointment, you must contact the Therapy Booking Centre on 01625 661875 as soon as possible to cancel your appointment.

What happens if I do not attend my appointment?
If you fail to attend without advising us you may be discharged.

How long will my treatment session last?
Patients will have a treatment time of approximately 20-30 minutes but this does vary depending on the type of treatment required.
Please arrive on time. If you arrive late, it may not be possible for you to be seen as other patients will have been booked in.

How many treatment sessions will I need?
This varies from patient to patient and depends on your condition. Some patients may only need to attend once. If you are not making progress with treatment, further options will be discussed and you may be referred back to your GP or Consultant. A letter is sent to you GP or consultant when your treatment is complete.
