ElectroEncephaloGram

ElectroEncephaloGram (EEG) is a harmless and painless investigation of the tiny natural electrical patterns from the brain that may be changed by certain disorders. The signals are monitored after we place 24 pads on the head and connecting them to a computer, the results then being saved onto disc. The recording is made by a clinical physiologist and later interpreted by a consultant neurophysiologist who specialises in reading EEGs.

Definition of physiological measurement (EEG)

The recording of those electrophysiological parameters appertaining to neurological function with a view to either aid diagnosis, monitor progress, or screen for a wide range of medical and psychiatric conditions.

The whole investigation usually lasts about 30 minutes during which time the patient will be asked to remain still and relaxed with the eyes closed, also possibly to take deep breaths for a short time and/or look at a flickering light. The trace is then analysed and we send a report to the referring doctor within a few days. There are no after-effects and the patient is free to return to their home or ward straight away.

The test

The test is performed on people of all ages to assess brain function. This means that a whole range of conditions fall within our scope and includes:

  • Epilepsy
  • Migraine
  • Dementia
  • Cerebrovascular accident (stroke)
  • Cerebrovascular disease
  • Head injuries
  • Blackouts
  • Headaches
  • Brain infection
  • Neurological disorders
  • Encephalopathies

This list is not exhaustive - much EEG work is undertaken to exclude clinical possibilities rather than find them.
