East Cheshire NHS Trust has a Clinical Effectiveness Team who assist with all aspects of clinical audit to help drive improvements to make your care more effective. 

What is clinical audit?

The current accepted definition and endorsed by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) is that,

"Clinical audit is a quality improvement process that seeks to improve patient care and outcomes, through a systematic review of care against explicit criteria and the implementation of change.  Aspects of the structure, processes and outcomes of care are selected and systematically evaluated against explicit criteria.  Where indicated, changes are implemented by an individual, team or service level and further monitoring is used to confirm improvement in health delivery"

Why use clinical audit?

As a quality improvement tool, audit can demonstrate that real efforts are being made by staff to deliver high quality professional care to all their patients.

According to the Department of Health’s Standards, Healthcare Organisations must ensure that “clinicians participate in regular clinical audit and reviews of clinical services.

Clinical audit — An introduction for patients

Clinical audit is about checking that patients are treated the right way and get the right care.

Clinical audit involves checking if the correct procedures are followed in giving patient care.

Doctors, nurses, therapists and other healthcare professionals do clinical audits so they can have evidence that they are meeting standards of good practice and so they can use the information to make improvements in services.

Clinical audit is carried out to improve the quality of patient care. It is about checking that patients are treated the right way and get the right care.
