The Pathology laboratory of East Cheshire NHS Trust is situated at Macclesfield District General Hospital. The department has formed a collaborative working partnership, Cheshire Pathology Services, with Mid Cheshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (MCHFT) for the provision of pathology services across the two sites. MCHFT is the legal entity through which the Division of Diagnostics and Clinical Support Services manages pathology

We are based in a purpose built laboratory in the Cooper Building with a separate mortuary facility located within the main hospital. The Phlebotomy Service is situated in the blood test department on the ground floor of the main hospital building. Our services offer a comprehensive range of pathology investigations plus a full clinical service in all pathology disciplines.

Patient Information

Fasting Blood Tests

For a fasting blood test, the patient should fast overnight for at least 12 hours, and have nothing to eat or drink (except for water) until blood has been collected.

Our services

Cheshire Pathology Services is committed to providing a safe, reliable and high quality service to our users. The laboratory has in place a Quality Management System (QMS) which endeavors to ensure that all processes within the department are handled in such a way as to promote quality and reduce risk.

All Pathology departments are accredited by United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS) against standards for Medical Laboratories – Requirements for quality and competency (ISO 15189:2012). Cellular Pathology





Where new tests or procedures require accreditation by UKAS, users will be informed by emails, information posted on the Intranet and Internet sites, and where appropriate by letter.

Schedules on the web site will be updated as new tests or procedures become accredited and non-accredited tests removed.

The department participates in a wide range of internal and external quality assurance programmes, including national schemes.

The department provides both an emergency and non-urgent diagnostic service for inpatients and outpatients as well as a service to patients under the care of General Practitioners in the region. Tests we are unable to perform on site are referred to laboratories who uphold equivalent quality standards.
